What is Family Group Conferencing? | Guiding Principles | What is the Process?

"Strong families build strong communities"

Family Conferencing

What is Family Group Conferencing (FGC)?

A family group conference is a formal meeting focused on the child. It brings together immediate and extended family members, kin and community in mutual support and collaboration to develop a plan to keep the child safe.

Family Conferencing

Guiding Principles

FGC must be:

  • Inclusive and collective
  • Family-focused approach building on competency and strengths
  • In partnership with family
  • A holistic, systemic, ecological view of child, family and community
  • Culturally sensitive and appropriate
  • Coordinator stays in an independent role; distinct and not aligned with the family group or service providers.

Family Counselling

What is the Process?

The conference has three phases which are supported by an independent, objective facilitator:

Stage #1: Information Giving
The meeting begins with a ritual chosen by the family group.
The strengths of the family are observed and provide a concise and non-judgmental description of the risks that exist for the child.
Questions raised by the family are answered.

Phase #2: Family Private Time
The family then has time on their own where they develop a plan to address the safety and well-being for their child(ren).

Phase #3: Review of the Plan
The plan is then presented to the referring workers for approval.
The coordinator writes up the plan utilizing the family’s language.

Phase #4: Follow-up
3-6 month follow-up with the family by the facilitator.
